Govenors

School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education.

Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards. The role of the governing body is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school. Time and time again Ofsted (the national inspection body for schools) has noted that the most effective schools demonstrate effective leadership and management - including by the governing body.

What do governors do?

School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the head teacher and deputy headteacher. In some schools the site is owned by the governing body. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the head teacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

Each individual governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing body. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body.

The role of the governing body is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.

I am a retired teacher of a primary school in Leicester.

During 2010/11, I volunteered in the school one morning per week and played the piano during singing / choir lessons. I became a community Governor in September 2011.

Children only get one chance with their education; consequently I believe teachers & parents must work tirelessly together to give them the best possible education & broadest learning opportunities. they should then have the skills and knowledge to pursue their dreams in their future.

I have been a Governor at Merrydale Junior School for the last 9 years  and I have worked here for 12 years.

I work in the office at the school where I have a lot of contact with both parents and children and I take an active interest in school life.

As I live in the local community I see the children who used to attend the school and can keep up to date with what they are doing now.

I enjoy working in the school environment and like to see the children's development as they make their way through the school.

I became a Governor in 1996, at the same time I began working at Merrydale as a Teaching Assistant.

I believe that a good education leads the start of a happy and full life. Merrydale offers great experiences and life skills to all pupils. I have seen many changes here resulting in a broad range of academic and extra curricular activities being offered.

I care greatly about the children and the future of our school and am proud to be a member of the Merrydale Team.
